Re-vamped, re-visited, re-ignited!
Ready for a new exploration – a revisitation – of the sharp and dynamic Grünfeld Defense, complete with multiple novelties and improvements?
The hypermodern Grünfeld has a reputation for offering Black a flexible way to repel White and leave him/her lagging behind in development.
In this course, the focus is on getting rich play that is both safe and within the fighting spirit of the Grünfeld.
Black is aiming is to get unbalanced positions with a focus on piece play and the initiative.
The Grünfeld Revisited comes fully endorsed by IM Mikel Huerga, who not only reviewed and proofed the lines but, being a Grünfeld player himself for the past 10 years, added valuable new ideas of his own.
Mikel Huerga is a Spanish International Master with four Grandmaster norms pushing for his GM title.
He is also a qualified FIDE Trainer and an Expert Trainer of the FEDA (Spanish Chess Federation).
At the time of publication, IM Huerga had a FIDE Elo of 2459. He reached his career high of 2467 in January 2018.
Strong visuals to help you understand how to fight for the initiative!
One of the strongest key points of the course is the great amount of explanations, aided by an abundance of visual cues – coloured squares and arrows – so that even lower-graded players new to the Grünfeld can understand the strategic ideas behind each position. In that respect, it is almost a course within a course on how to play with the initiative!
There are model games for each line as well with full annotations to guide the student and aide him or her in absorbing the contents.
Learn-as-you-play friendly for the tournament player
The course has a repertoire summary chapter, which will help you visualise the tree of all the lines in the course together. This is ideal as a quick reference or overview if you are new to the opening, but want to start playing the Grünfeld straightaway. If you decide to adopt this approach, which is perfectly valid, we recommend that after playing your tournament game, you go over the played line in its corresponding chapter and that you try to understand the ideas behind the chapter as a whole, then get into the specifics of the line and other details. This will help cement what you learn!
Comprehensive and thoughtful touches
Each chapter kicks off with a quick introduction to the line and includes some appetizer games showcasing some of the most memorable Grünfeld games of all times.
The author also offers alternative lines in positions that could warrant a different approach. Many times, these were added when there was a line leading to a draw, which may be sufficient for you depending on the specific situation.
Even lines that are not part of the repertoire have been added to the course with explanations why not to play them or why they don’t work as well. Can it get any more comprehensive?!
