Grandmaster Nils Grandelius presents…
The Complete Guide to the “Grandest” Opening after 1.e4
The world’s strongest players have looked to the Ruy Lopez for a win against 1…e5 for decades. With rich strategic and tactical possibilities for both sides, it’s little wonder why elite players love the Spanish Game.
But with all this grandmaster attention, the Ruy Lopez has become one of the most deeply theoretical openings in the entire game of chess. If you’re not careful, you might step right into a landmine.
But if you know what you’re doing, your opponents will be the ones running into trouble while you score point after point.
Know the Theory and Win
With the Grand Ruy Lopez, learning the theory isn’t as hard as it sounds. Not only is it perfect for repetition study with MoveTrainer®, the rich concepts of the Ruy Lopez are masterfully explained to you by one of the most competent practitioners of our time – Grandmaster Nils Grandelius.
The top-ranked Swedish chess player is a rising star of the elite ranks and a true opening specialist. In fact, he knows his openings so well, he even served as a second for Magnus Carlsen, preparing him for the 2016 and 2018 World Chess Championships.
But this coach of champions is such an opening guru that he can break this complex opening down piece by piece for players leveled amateur to master. Through more than 600 lines, you’ll learn the finer points of all Black’s major responses, including the:
♝Arkhangelsk Variation (6…Bc5) and Neo-Møller (5…Bc5) – GM Grandelius will show you how to navigate a minefield of tactical traps and steer your opponent right into them
♝Open Spanish Game (5…Nxe4) – You’ll learn how to push back Black’s forceful attacks and overcome them with a big positional advantage
♝Martinez Variation (5…Be7) – With the recommended d3 lines, you’ll avoid the drawish Marshall Attack and keep fighting for an edge
♝Berlin Defense (3…Nf6) – Don’t let the ‘Berlin Wall’ stop you from going for the win – GM Grandelius shows you how to avoid drawish play and keep dynamic possibilities on the board
♝Steinitz, Cozio, and other less common variations – this is the complete guide to the Ruy Lopez; rest assured you’ll be covered against anything Black can throw your way
And as an added bonus, GM Grandelius throws in the alternative Anderssen Variation with 5.d3, which cuts out a lot of Black’s mainline theoretical options in favor of a very practical, playable game for White.

In two recent wins, my opponents failed to follow the golden rules, making it easy for me to win the games.

I bought this course with video few weeks ago (thanks to @JRHat for recommending it to me).

I’ve only reviewed all the black lines but I am liking the author’s approach of adding exercises after each chapter to make sure you are looking at the positions themselves rather than just routinely memorizing the lines without absorbing the content of his commentary.

I would never recommend this book to anybody that I would consider a beginner, and maybe not even a “casual” player (depending on the definition).

I appreciate the effort gone into it. It’s helped me become better at my openings and I’m looking forward to what he has next in store. Cheers.

keep repeating basic principles annoying number of times (sometimes say it with a beard then later repeat it without the beard 😁)
Leo (verified owner) –
he gives you basic principles that just works 90% of the situations – it sounded silly to me at first, but then it became a daily prayer
