Sacrifice your b-pawn,
get total central domination!
The Blumenfeld Gambit was invented over a hundred years ago by Benjamin Blumenfeld. His idea was that after 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.Nf3 c5 4.d5 b5, Black will lose the b5-pawn, but in return get full control of the center, with the possibility to launch dangerous attacks once lines open for the bishops:

And Blumenfeld’s idea was successful. World-class players like Alekhine started playing the Blumenfeld Gambit to deliver impressive tactical and yet positionally complex games, including the famous game Tarrasch-Alekhine, 1922:

This is what it can look like after Black takes advantage of the central control and piece activity: White’s rook is trapped, and the extra pawn doesn’t help at all!
Though rarely seen on the highest level nowadays, the Blumenfeld Gambit is far from being refuted. Any advantage White might be able to get in some lines will be too small to capitalize on.
A huge plus for this opening is that it is relatively rare, which means opponents are less likely to be familiar with its typical plans and ideas—whereas Blumenfeld players will be in their element.
A contemporary Blumenfeld expert, aCupOfGreenTea, decided to write a whole encyclopedia-like Chessable course on it, covering even lines where White avoids the gambit on move 3. In this Short & Sweet-version, you will find a sample line for each of the most important continuations, namely the following:
🌼 Blumenfeld Gambit Accepted, 7.Nc3, 7.g3, 7.Bg5, 7.e3, 7.Bf4
🌼 Blumenfeld Gambit Semi-Accepted, 5.cxb5
🌼 Blumenfeld Gambit Declined, 5.Bg5, 5.e4, 5.Bf4, 5.g4
🌼 Fianchetto Benoni, 3. g3
🌼 Anti-Benoni, 4. Nc3, 4.g3
