This Course is Why You Never Resign Early!
Doubled pawns, down an exchange, less activity, or down a piece – is it time to resign?
The answer is No! You fight back!
Resourceful Chess: Defense and Counterplay Volume 2 is the second edition in Grandmaster Boris Avrukh’s series of defense courses.
In the first, he taught essential patterns everyone should know to defend successfully.
This time, he teaches you to fight back in all manner of worse positions when a sturdy defense is not enough.
Even when the game may seem lost – with the methods taught here, you will become a more creative player, add to your strategic toolbox, and become an overall better player by reclaiming points or half points you would have otherwise lost.
Some of the counterplay strategies you will learn:
🥊Create active counterplay with pawns – learn when you can bet on your passed pawns and forget about passive defense
🥊Pose problems for your opponent with major and minor piece mastery – learn when you should trade heavy pieces even when down material in order to activate your remaining forces
🥊“Muddy the waters” with hyperactive counterplay – when truly on the ropes, make the situation difficult for your opponent to evaluate, even with objectively dubious moves
🥊Create luck for yourself with surprise pawn breaks – your opponent will be surprised to see you make a pawn push on the same side they’re attacking you on
🥊When all else fails go after the King! – leave your opponent with no other choice than to respond to checks and threats of mate
Author GM Boris Avrukh has compiled the most inspiring and real comeback stories by way of model games and has broken them down into individual puzzles – with annotations to guide you to find what is left in the tank. These are concrete methods for turning the game around in your favor when everything seems to be going against you.
And he knows a thing or two about fighting back himself – a world youth champion, 2x Israeli champion, Olympic medalist, he knows how to go after every point with utmost vigor.
Plus he’s got a coaching resumé that rivals the best of them, having trained elite players for some of their most important matches, including Vladimir Kramnik, Hikaru Nakamura, and Fabiano Caruana.

Even above beginner level, knowing the first ten moves is usually sufficient, and the variations in this course average nine moves.

Also, this course is not aimed at advanced and master level therefore; it didn’t overwhelmed me with things that I don’t need to worry about at my level.

I’m still a fairly new adult learner and have looked at all the major courses and finally feel like I have an option that makes sense for my level and available time.

he gives you basic principles that just works 90% of the situations – it sounded silly to me at first, but then it became a daily prayer

Another problem I faced was during my well-planned opening, sometimes opponent would bring the queen out

Even when one of my opponents didn’t follow theory, which often happens with beginners,

he would cover all possible silly reactions that could derail my well-thought opening, and how to deal with them

Now that I don’t need to invest much energy in the opening phase, I can concentrate on improving my middle and endgame play.

I’ve only reviewed all the black lines but I am liking the author’s approach of adding exercises after each chapter to make sure you are looking at the positions themselves rather than just routinely memorizing the lines without absorbing the content of his commentary.
