Bust Out Of The Caro-Kann Cage
In Just 23 Lean And Mean Lines
Stifled by the passive but airtight Caro-Kann? Looking for a reliable and repeatable way to get that open, tactics-rich position every 1.e4 player desires?
If so, then you’ll love this opening course by National Master Nicholas “Sordis” Gross.
Not only is Gross a veteran 1.e4 player. He also took up the Caro-Kann later in his career, making him an expert in the opening from both sides.
And through the years, Gross always turned to…
The Exchange Variation
To Beat The Caro-Kann
World champions Bobby Fischer and Magnus Carlsen have played the Exchange Caro-Kann — and created impressive attacking games with it.
And if the Exchange Caro-Kann is good enough for these top players, you can bet it’s good enough for you, too.
Here’s how the opening works:
After 1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5, you’ll exchange pawns with 3.exd5. So you can focus on developing as fast as possible without worrying about the tension in the center.
Next, you’ll seize the b1-h7 diagonal with 4.Bd3 and support your d-pawn with 5.c3… seize the other diagonal with 6.Bf4… eye the queenside with 7.Qb3… and bring your knights to d2 and f3.

The main tabiya of the
Exchange Caro-Kann
In less than 10 moves, you’ve gained space, active squares for your pieces, and a risk-free position that’s almost impossible to lose.
But even better:
You also have a simple attacking plan, starting with “knight to e5” followed by a kingside pawn storm!
That’s the beauty of the Exchange Caro-Kann. You enjoy straightforward opening play, plus excellent chances to score a knockout. All while keeping the must-learn theory at a minimum.
In fact, the course only has 23 MoveTrainer® variations.
On the other hand, the course’s low variation count doesn’t mean it’s low in instruction. Every line comes complete with:
✅ Strategy breakdowns explaining the ideas behind the moves…
✅ Visual aids to tell you where the pawns and pieces go after the opening…
✅ Plus reference games which show you how the positions play out in the real world.
You’ll also get alternative variations — enabling you to switch from the kingside to the queenside — from tactical to positional — to keep your opponents guessing.
And lastly, you’ll get a collection of 18 annotated model games which serve as a “template” for playing the middlegame and endgame.
