Take Your Opponents Into A Deep Transpositional Forest That They Might Never Escape
As opening theory expands, it becomes harder and harder to get your opponents out of their comfort zone. The Torre Attack takes the game away from your opponents’ homework and into territory where you’ll be better prepared.
GM Pepe Cuenca’s Torre Attack delivers a complete White repertoire against everything Black can try. Against pretty much any setup, you’ll play d4, Nf3 and Bg5.

Our starting setup works against many of Black’s options
This move order often limits Black’s options. For example, we’ve avoided the Nimzo-Indian and the Bogo-Indian entirely, since any …Bb4 checks would be met with c3, winning a tempo.
This is a solid setup but it’s one that has a hidden bite. Black should be cautious not to underestimate our ideas.

You’ll often get to play against a damaged pawn structure, Trompowsky-style
With Black’s options being a little limited, you’ll be able to handle fianchetto systems without getting bogged down in mountains of theory. The King’s Indian Defense and Grunfeld Defense are big openings, but GM Cuenca will show you these easy-to-handle positions for White that give great winning chances.

White’s extra space gives us an edge
GM Cuenca deals with the “Anti-Torre system” in a slightly different (and rare) way, giving a move that is seen in less than 1% of master games. 3.c3 gives you great chances to transpose back to regular Torre positions.

avoid Black’s annoying 3.Ne4 by delaying the development of the bishop
Transpositions are one of the big advantages of the Torre Attack. You can use sneaky move orders to trick your opponents into positions they don’t normally play and keep things within your repertoire. And even though, like every Lifetime Repertoire, the repertoire holds up on its own – the Torre works particularly well with other opening repertoires.
GM Pepe Cuenca is widely regarded as one of the best and most exciting commentators, regularly covering top events in Spanish and English for chess24 and chess.com. He has a peak rating of 2558 and a PhD in Applied Mathematics.
