An aggressive 1.e4 repertoire full of bite
Grandmaster Sethuraman is back with his latest lifetime repertoire course for Chessable.
After his popular 1.e4 e5 repertoire for Black, it’s now time for him to cover his favorite move for White: 1.e4.
And the centerpiece of this 1.e4 repertoire is the Scotch Opening.
If you’re not already a Scotch aficionado, you may be wondering, why play this opening?
Well, compared to most 1.e4 e5 openings for White, the Scotch has four big benefits:
#1: It lets White achieve harmonious development and take control of the center.
#2: It’s not played as often as the Spanish or Italian. So your opponents won’t be as booked up.
#3: There’s less theory to memorize. The Ruy Lopez is a labyrinth where Black has a ton of good options on move three. By contrast, Black only has one good move against the Scotch.
#4: It leads to open positions that suit players who enjoy tactical, aggressive play.
So, with all these benefits, it’s easy to understand why Garry Kasparov revived the Scotch as his surprise weapon in the 1990 World Championship match against Anatoly Karpov – scoring 1.5/2 with the opening.
…Or why Magnus Carlsen and other top Grandmasters have played it in recent years.
This is a sound opening that lets you play for an advantage.
GM Sethuraman – one of the strongest players to ever come out of India and a former U16 World Champion – will teach you everything you need to know to play the Scotch. And, of course, all these lines are backed by the latest engine analysis.
More than just a Scotch Repertoire
But Lifetime Repertoires: Sethuraman’s 1.e4 – Part 1 isn’t just a course on the Scotch. It’s the first half of a complete 1.e4 repertoire.
As well as the Scotch, this half covers…
🎯 The Petroff Defense
🎯 The Philidor Defense
🎯 The Latvian Gambit and the Elephant Gambit
🎯 The Scandinavian
🎯 The Pirc and Modern Defenses
🎯 The Alekhine
🎯 Owen’s Defense, the Nimzowitsch Defense and the St George
All-in-all, Lifetime Repertoires: Sethuraman’s 1.e4 – Part 1 has 26 hours of video instruction and 523 engine-checked trainable variations.
But you don’t have to learn all 523 to start playing this repertoire. GM Sethuraman has included a Quickstarter chapter of just 55 variations.

I’ve only reviewed all the black lines but I am liking the author’s approach of adding exercises after each chapter to make sure you are looking at the positions themselves rather than just routinely memorizing the lines without absorbing the content of his commentary.
