“The Berlin Defense against 1.d4”
If you’ve ever heard of the Berlin Defense against the Ruy Lopez, you probably know it’s called “The Berlin Wall” – virtually impenetrable with precise play!
And with Lifetime Repertoires: Cuenca’s Queen’s Gambit Declined, Grandmaster Pepe Cuenca is providing you with an equally sturdy defense against 1.d4.
You will build upon the famously solid Queen’s Gambit Declined and make your position even more airtight. And capitalize as your opponents overextend and weaken themselves trying to break through!
Cuenca’s main weapon is the Lasker Variation (1.d4 d5 2.c4 e6 3.Nf3 Nf6 4.Nc3 Be7 5.Bg5 h6 6.Bh4 0-0 7.e3 Ne4)

Cuenca decided to take up this rock-solid defense after being a lifelong King’s Indian player. In search of something less risky and unwaveringly solid against strong competition, the Lasker was just what the doctor ordered.
This isn’t all about the Lasker though, you get a bulletproof defense against all 1.d4 setups.
Here’s a look:
🛡️Concrete central play in the Catalan – a central exchange leading to you more often than not trading light-square bishops (your worst piece for their best!)
🛡️Force the exchange of minor pieces in the Lasker Variation – allowing your major pieces to do what they do best – attack!
🛡️Gift a pawn to make White’s pieces passive – after 3.Nf3 Nf6 4.Bg5, punish White for overaggressive play and push their pieces back
🛡️Make a central strike against the systems – a timely c5 will give you the bishop pair in the London, leave White cramped in the Colle, and an innovative kingside push against the Torre Attack
Plus much more!
An energetic presenter gives you his greatest lines
A world-famous face of the game, Cuenca makes learning chess a blast when commentating on live events. But he’s also got a track record of making in-depth and instructive courses for Chessable, with this course being his fourth full course in English
In this course, he breaks down cutting-edge engine lines to give them real human meaning. He’s selected his own repertoire, carefully selecting a mix of understandable engine lines and his own innovations.
The result is one of the sturdiest comprehensive 1.d4 replies out there.

Also, this course is not aimed at advanced and master level therefore; it didn’t overwhelmed me with things that I don’t need to worry about at my level.
