To Castle or Not to Castle −
Learn How to Make the Right Decision
When we know we’re about to make a decision that is irreversible, we usually take more time to weigh our options than we do with choices that can potentially be undone. In chess, however, we often seem to forget that castling is one such irreversible and game-changing decision that deserves careful consideration.
It’s very easy to fall into the habit of castling on autopilot. But getting it wrong can lead to immediate, and sometimes fatal, consequences, even in positions where you wouldn’t expect it. Consider the following example:

At first sight, it might look like it’s a good moment
for Black to castle. But not at second sight…
This course is aimed at sharpening your awareness around castling. It teaches you which factors to consider when deciding whether, when, and where to castle. Instead of blindly following misleading principles like “castle as early as possible”, you will learn how to make your choices based on the specificities of the position.
Here’s an overview of what you’ll learn in the course:
💡 Which factors to consider when making castling decisions
💡 How to avoid common pitfalls
💡 How strong players handle castling in different positions
You will also get:
✅ A final test to apply what you’ve learned
✅ Practical decision-making tips
✅ >80 reference games
But you’ll not only improve your own castling skills: you’ll also learn and practice how to recognize and punish poor castling choices by your opponents.
Many of the positions will be presented to you from both sides: first you’re asked to make a decision regarding castling for one side, and then in the next puzzle, you’re asked to exploit an incorrect castling choice in that same position for the other side. This will help you develop a deeper understanding of when castling is right or wrong and, most importantly, why.
Let’s see some more examples: Would you castle kingside or queenside here? Or not at all?

Here, castling queenside is the safest option for the king,
and it controls the important d-file. While the correct choice
isn’t always as clear as in this example, the character of the game
often significantly depends on the castling choices.

This position may look similar to the previous one,
but here castling queenside would be a tactical mistake!
We do want to have our rook on the d-file though.
No rule is without exception
In the course, it becomes clear that there are no generalizable rules to learn when it comes to castling. The right decision always depends on a variety of factors: potential attacks, lines that could open up, pawn structure, etc. Here you’ll learn how to recognize and assess these different factors to make good, informed castling decisions in your games.
Let’s conclude with a final example: how would you go about castling in this position?

Castling does not always serve as protection; it can also be used as a weapon!
