After 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3, you’ll open the f8-a3 diagonal for your bishop, and rule out Anti-Sicilians like the Rossolimo with 2…e6. Then you’ll rapidly develop your knights to the center with 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nc3 Nc6.
The Four Knights Sicilian
So far so logical, and so is the follow-up:
Put the e4-pawn under pressure by pinning the knight with …Bb4 — open up lines for your pieces with …d7-d5 — then use the momentum to secure long-term positional trumps or drum up an attack.
Contrast your clear-cut play with the difficult moves White must find, because their most natural continuations are, in fact, mistakes!
For example:
If White plays the club-player-favorite plan of 6.Be3 — followed by Qd2 and O-O-O like in the Najdorf or Dragon — they’ll find your pieces to be too fast to allow such a primitive attack…
White has no attack to speak of and must even
watch out for …Kh8 and …f5 ideas
